Deskew: straighten skewed scans without warping content

Pages fed askew create stepped text lines and hinder OCR as much as human reading of long passages. Deskew is therefore a standard step - but not autopilot without looking at content.

When deskew helps

Slight feeder skew responds well. Strong distortion from handheld phone photos often needs better capture geometry first, not only a digital angle fix. On dimensioned plans, aggressive unskew can visually falsify scales; use restraint.

Deskew before OCR is usually better than after. Late straightening can invalidate an existing text layer.

Deskew checklist

• Mark skewed pages or let automation detect them.
• Check correction strength on samples.
• Inspect table lines and stamps for warp.
• Treat plans and photos separately from text pages if needed.
• Keep the original.
• After deskew: OCR spot check on critical digits.

With contrast and rotation

Measured drawings and sketches

Know deskew limits

On badly warped phone photos a new scan often beats extreme straighten. Check deskew on edges and table lines: warped digits are worse than a slight skew.

Log skew angles

When one scanner repeatedly produces skewed stacks, note typical angles and check the device and feeder. Deskew then masks a symptom, not a cause. A short note to assistants (“scanner 2 feeds crooked”) saves filter work on every matter. Device care and document care belong together.

After deskew, compare critical measurements on plans (dimension chain, grid). Warp often shows there first. On deviation, return to the original skew and rescan instead of more correction.

Check feeder and paper condition

Skewed stacks often come from bent paper or worn feeders. Deskew should not be the only answer. A look at the device saves filter work across dozens of pages.
